During the early period of Islaam, there was not any formal Madrasa for women as of today. But Muslim women complying with Shariah injunctions had been rendering their services to Islamic sciences for centuries along with discharging all other responsibilities placed on their shoulders by Islamic Shariah. Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani mentions that the early centuries of Islam record more than 1500 female scholars of Hadith, including several wives of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلمand his companions as well as women in succeeding generations.

The tremendous contribution of Muslim women to the community and their interest in the subject resulted into establishing traditional academic centers for them. The first formal women’s Madrasa came into existence in the min-ninth century in Seville where subjects like Philosophy, History, Geography, Mathematics, Astronomy and various crafts were taught besides Islamic sciences. Two Madrasa were built for women in Delhi, India during the period of Radiya sultana who succeeded her father Sultan Altamash to the throne in Delhi in 1236Ad.

For detail on the subject, see the book, ‘Muslim Khawateen Ki Ilmi Khidmaat’ by Maulana Syeed Ghulam Mustafa Bukhari Aqeel.

It is hard to give the exact number of students and Madaris for women in Pakistan.
    مع السلامة
